As in most places in the US, St. Patrick’s Day is a well celebrated “holiday” in Topeka. Since the kids were born, my wife and I haven’t celebrated a St. Pats like we did in college, but we have plenty of other activities, that may or may not include green beer, to fill the time.
Blarney Breakfast
The Blarney Breakfast is a fund-raiser for the Easter Seals Capper Foundation held at the Texas Roadhouse. The Capper Foundation is a community resource that provides services to enhance the independence of people with disabilities, primarily children and their families. In my earlier days I worked with children with mental/emotional disabilities. On occasion, I worked in conjunction with The Capper Foundation. Their facilities are magnificent and the work they do for children and families in our area is beyond commendable. If you can make it to the Blarney Breakfast, I encourage you to do so. Breakfast is served from 6:00 – 10:00 am.

Great Topeka Bed Race
Unfortunately, I haven’t been lucky enough to attend all the St. Pat’s day events. One event that I’ve failed to attend is the Great Topeka Bed Race. The Great Topeka Bed Race started in 2009 as a benefit for Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc. I need to get together with some of my more engineer minded friends and own that race! The race starts at 9:00 am. You can find more information here.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
One of the first events my family and I attended upon moving to Topeka was the Topeka St. Patrick’s Day parade. This years parade kicks off at high noon. The parade committee has again welcomed participants to add a “Google theme” to show continuing support for bringing the Google Fiber Experiment to Topeka. The St. Patrick’s Day parade is one of the best attended parades in Topeka and therefore, the most fun. It is a great time. Hope to see you there.

This is, by no means, the be all and end all of Topeka St. Pat’s day events. You can find out more about festivities at the Official Topeka St. Patrick’s Day Parade website.

I took the whole day off, learned my mistake from last year and having to go back to work. ;)
Brandon, that’s a great idea. If I thought I could get the day off from work, that would definitely be an option. With Steph starting a new job and several inspections coming up, I’m going to be tied to my desk until after April. The St. Patrick’s Day events may be “on my calendar,” but the Limon’s will not be attending this year. Have a great time and take lots of photos!
